ipTouch Installation and Configuration

Preparing for ipTouch

The first thing you can do to prepare for ipTouch is make sure that your network uses a 100 Mbit fast ethernet switch or router that includes "switching" capabilities for managing network traffic.

For installation and configuration, you will need a keyboard with a PS2 style connector. A PS2 mouse can also be used but is not required.

Default Settings

Your ipTouch device is shipped with the TS 2 (static IP) option enabled below, and a screen resolution of 1024x768. If you wish to use this resoltion and a static IP, then the only changes you need to make are to set the device and host PC IP addresses as described below.

Software Installation

1. Download the NComputing management software on the host computer.

http://www.ncomputing.com/download/pcexpanion.zip

2. Run the NCT-2000-XP Console program and open the navigation tree to:

  • UTMA/UTSA-Settings
    • Software Settings (local)
      • Unformation & Settings
        • Serial Numbers

Click on the Serial Numbers item and from the Action menu, select Add Serial Number. Enter your serial number and activation key found on the back of the RelayTouch-UTMA. You do not have to register the serial number at this time. Registering a serial number associates the UTMA device with the host computer. You should register the serial number only after the UTMA is installed in its permanent location.

4.Connect the ipTouch to the network with a CAT5 patch cable.

5.Connect a keyboard (and optional mouse) to the ipTouch. The mouse is the left PS2 connector.

6.Connect the power supply to the ipTouch (Note: Please read Power Supply Note below).

7. ipTouch has two different modes of operation. If your host computer is using an automatic IP address, use the AutoDetect configuration. If you are using a static IP address, use the TS 2 Configuration. For each of these settings, the UTMA device stores a separate configuration, including the screen resolution of the UTMA device. By default, the TS 2 option is set to 1024x768 for the maximum resolution of the display. See Display Settings below for other settings.

Autodetection Configuration

A. UTMA Network Configuration

From the NComputing startup screen, select the Setup button. If you are using a keyboard only, you can change the highlighted field by using the TAB key.

B. Autodetection Enable

Select the Network tab, and check the "Get Dynamic IP Address" option.

C. Autodetection Host Profile

Select the TS Options tab, and highlight the Autodetection item and select Enable/Disable until the checkmark appears next to the Autodetection item.

Make sure none of the other items have a checkmark next to them.

With the Autodetection item selected, select the Edit option.

D. Save Settings

Select OK to save and close the Edit Configuration Profile screen, and then select Save to save the settings.

TS 2 Configuration

A. HOST IP Address

Determine the IP address of the host computer. You can do this by running a Command Prompt window and type IPCONFIG.

B. UTMA Network Configuration

From the NComputing startup screen, select the Setup button. If you are using a keyboard only, you can change the highlighted field by using the TAB key.

C. TS 2 Enable

Select the Network tab, and check the "Use Static IP Address Option". Enter the IP address and gateway that you would like for the UTMA device.

D. TS 2 Host Profile

Select the TS Options tab, and highlight the Autodetection item and select Enable/Disable until the checkmark disappears next to the Autodetection item.

Select the TS 2 item and select Enable/Disable until a check mark appears next to the TS 2 item.

With the TS 2 item selected, select the Edit option.

E. Save Settings

In the Edit Configuration Profile screen, enter the host computer's IP as the Terminal Server Network address.

Select OK to save and close the Edit Configuration Profile screen, and then select Save to save the settings.

8. After setting the UTMA device in either the Autodetection or TS 2 options, you can use the Connect button on the opening screen to log in the device. Windows Automatic Updates

Both Windows and the NCT-2000 software will need to be updated from time-to-time. Generally, it is recommended that you delay the updating of Windows 3 to 7 days. This gives the NCT-2000 software time to stay in sync with Windows updates. In the "Security Center" section of the Windows Control Panel, select "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" under the Automatic Updates tab.

ipTouch Display Settings

ipTouch is capable of 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 display resolution at 60Hz. Changing the display setting will require RelayTouch to be removed from the wall. The display settings are stored in the UTMA device by its Configuration profiles. The profile setting should match the display setting. Use the following instructions to change the display resolution:

  • Edit the Configuration profile as described in section 7 above.
  • In the Edit Configuration Profile screen, select the desired display resolution.
  • Select "Use 60Hz VSYNC" and save the setting.
  • Allow the UTMA to connect to the host computer. When the desktop appears, the monitor may be out of scale.
  • While viewing the desktop, use the three holes on the back of the monitor to change the settings. DO NOT use a metalic or sharp object. The buttons are located deep inside the chassis and may be hard to find at first.
  • When the settings are correct, cycle the settings until the monitor menu is no longer visible on the device.
  • Unplug the power cable from the UTMA device. This will store the settings for the monitor.
Power Supply Note

ipTouch is supplied with a 15v power supply. This power supply is larger than is required by the ipTouch. Typically, the DC side of the power supply is cut and spliced into an 18/2 gauge wire running through the wall. Using a long DC wire causes voltage drop. The exact amount of voltage drop can be calculated here http://www.currentsolutions.com/knowledge/vdrop.htm. ipTouch uses approximately 2 amps. If you are not planning to extend the DC side of the power supply, then a 12v power supply should be used instead. Using the 15v power supply directly without any voltage drop is sav for a short period of time (like during setup, configuration and testing). Contact RedRadio for a replacement power supply if needed.

Troubleshooting Guide

Installing Software You download the latest software from here.

Slow Screen Refresh ipTouch requires an 100 Mbit fast ethernet switch or router that includes "switching" capabilities for managing network traffic. With an older "unmanaged" hub or router, the device cannot refresh its screen at a fast rate and the effect will be a very slow screen "repaint." Obtain a new or updated switch or router.

To test the device without going through your network, you can use a network CROSSOVER cable between ipTouch and the host computer.

"DHCP server was not found" message. This indicates that ipTouch was set to use the Autodetection login and get the IP address automatically. To use this option your router has to have DHCP server functionality activated. If you do not have a DHCP feature, you can configure ipTouch to connect with a static IP address.

"Host unreachable..." message. This indicates that ipTouch was set to use a Static IP address (TS 2 option) and it cannot find the Host computer that was identified in the TS Option setting. Go back and check the TS 2 settings as described in the installation guide.

ipTouch was working now wont connect. This can occur if the installed Windows patches or "Hotfixes" are newer than the NCT-2000 software. Usually, uninstalling the latest Windows patch and updating the NCT-2000 software fixes this problem.

"No Terminal Server found or not all services initialized yet, please click on the connection list and try again." This message appears when there exists no Host PC with NCT-2000 installed in the network currently connected.

"TS ERROR - INVALID OR NO SERIAL NUMBER" message. This message appears when there is no serial number in the Host PC that ipTouch is trying to connect to. The serial number can be found on the back of the ipTouch monitor and entered into the NCT-2000 software.

"Connection was closed but your data is not lost and applications still run at server side. Please connect Terminal Server later" message. This message appears when connection stops due to problems or abnormality occurred in the Host PC or networking equipment. Check the Host PC or network equipment when this message appears and restart by disconnecting and connecting the power to ipTouch. Unless the Host PC is rebooted, existing data in the Host PC may be used as is.

Ctrl+Alt+Del Screen is showing. Disable the Ctrl+Alt+Del screen in the group policy editor (Windows 2003 Server and when using a domain controller)

The installed NCT-2000-XP version is higher than the one you are attempting to install. This message may occur when trying to reinstall or upgrade the server software. To fix this problem, delete the windows registry key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Multiuser.

Known Issues and Incompatibilities

Windows Media Center and XBox 360. ipTouch is not compatible with XBox 360. This is a known issue and is being investigated.

Sleep Button and Display Sleep. The Sleep button on the UTMA splash screen will power down the UTMA device. The power supply to the device will have to be unplugged and replugged in order to start the UTMA device again. This a known issue and is currently being investigated. You can enable a blank screen saver in the Windows desktop session on the UTMA device, but the power to the monitor will still be on.
